Dec. 10: Maokong

Our adventure today entailed taking the Maokong Gondola into the mountains at the southern edge of Taipei city. Taking the gondola is easier than driving up the winding mountain roads and also lets you look at some beautiful scenery during the trip. It is a little scary at parts though, since you are at an elevation of 299.3 meters.

They now have cabins called the “Eyes of Maokong Gondola” which have a glass floor letting you see below the cabin. Thankfully we did not take those as I think that would have been a little bit too terrifying. The gondola also turns direction nearly ninety degrees which is unusual for gondolas. The trip takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Although there are four total stations where passengers can get on or off, we took the gondola all the way to the final station in Maokong. Maokong is known for producing high quality tea. There are tea farms all over the surrounding mountains which you can easily see during the gondola. Near the Maokong station are about 50 different teahouses and restaurants.

We stopped to drink tea at one of the teahouses. I am not sure what the tea was called but it had a flower in it as well giving the tea a really unique taste. We also ate some snacks while drinking the tea that were delicious.

The whole experience was pretty unique. Our table at the teahouse had a fantastic view of Taipei City and you could even make out the outline of the Taipei 101, Taipei’s largest building and landmark. Everything we ate there was absolutely delicious.
